Lauriston Alumnae - Worldwide! |
After leaving Lauriston, Elizabeth completed an Arts degree at Melbourne University and was then awarded a one-year scholarship to study in Switzerland, little knowing that this little land-locked country would later become her home.
Everything about Europe was exciting to Elizabeth – the proximity of so many cultures and languages, the awareness of centuries of history, and her sense of freedom and independence. She prolonged her stay and after meeting her husband in 1989, chose to make a new life for herself in the Swiss city of Basel.
Prior to 1989, Elizabeth enjoyed her work as a technical writer, took up aquarelle painting, learned to speak Greek and spent holidays on the Greek islands. Marriage propelled the pattern of her life to change and instead of island-hopping on her own in the Cyclades, Elizabeth and her husband spent holidays touring the South of France in a camper van, and along with her new job as a scientific translator, she gradually discovered her vocation as a writer of fiction.
Retrospectively, she had always known she was going to write. Elizabeth has written ten novels, most of which she has published herself, giving her complete control over text, copy-editing, layout, cover design and presentation.
Common themes of her books are human relationships, the search for identity, the power of memories and how a person’s past can affect their later life. Several novels are set in the Luberon in Provence, where they have a second home; two are set on Greek islands; two in the Swiss city of Basel; and her most recent book, Smoke Signals from Paris, was inspired by the fire in Notre-Dame.
Elizabeth prefers to hold a physical book, but is excited that eight of her novels are available as eBooks that can be read through many devices by installing the Kindle reader App through Amazon / Kindle - https://www.amazon.com/author/elizabethkarlhuberbooks .
Elizabeth has very fond memories of her years at Lauriston. She loved school and was keen to learn, loved sport, singing and other extra-curricular activities. Elizabeth grew up an only child, after her little sister was tragically killed in a car accident just after her 5th birthday. This tragedy later inspired her to symbolically give her sister a longer life through her novel A Pact from the Past.
Elizabeth particularly appreciates the companionship with people her age - forming friendships that have stood the test of time.
The present world situation repeatedly brings it home to her, what privileged lives we lead. Elizabeth also feels privileged to have been educated at Lauriston, although she says, perhaps didn’t realise it at the time.
